ANTONYMS (A)

LINEAGE DESCRIPTION
Y cell

PDA

Y blast cell (S)
F cell (archaic)

Y (herm)
ABprpppaaaa

Y.a (male)

A motor neuron that becomes terminally differentiated as PDA after early larval stages in the hermaphrodite when it forms a portion of the anterior wall of the rectum. In the male, the Y cell acts as a blast cell and divides again and the anterior daughter becomes PDA (Sulston and Horvitz, 1977).

Y link

A proteinaceous extension (usually Y shaped) that connects an axoneme to the cell membrane of a cilium.

YFP

Yellow fluorescent protein

A useful tag for fluorescence microscopy, it is genetic mutant of green fluorescent protein. Its excitation peak is 514nm and its emission peak is 527nm. There are a number of more stable variants of YFP including Venus (Nagai et al., 2002) and Citrine (Griesbeck et al., 2001). For more details on fluorescent proteins see link.

Yolk Vitellogenin (S)

A nutrient protein produced by intestinal cells and secreted by them into the pseudocoelom, from which it can be shared with other tissues in the body. Yolk is sequestered inside a membrane while lying within the cytoplasm (forming a yolk granule), but in the pseudocoelom it exists as a large free “particle” without a membrane coating. It can then be endocytosed back into another cytoplasmic granule in receiving cells, including oocytes prior to fertilization. Yolk accumulates within the body cavity in aging, post-reproductive animals (Herndon et al., 2002).

Yolk granule Hyaline sphere (S)

A membrane bounded sac containing yolk.
